Nepali Congress (NC) president and former Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala today went a step further in attacking the ruling Maoist party — this time not at a political platform, but during his meeting with the visiting Indian External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee.
Koirala’s daughter and NC’s foreign department chief, Sujata Koirala, quoted him as saying that democracy is at risk because of the activities of the Maoists. According to her, the NC president told Mukherjee that the Maoists have still not stopped violence and killings.
During the meeting with the Indian External Affairs Minister held at Koirala’s Maharajgunj residence, NC strongman also said the Maoists have not implemented any of the agreements reached in the past and that other parties, too, will now stop abiding by the agreements.
Sujata, who was present at the meeting, further quoted Koirala as saying that the NC is committed to drafting the constitution on time.
Mukherjee, on his part, said India wants to see peace and political stability in Nepal and is ready to extend necessary help in this regard.
Mukherjee arrived in Kathmandu on a three-day official visit Monday evening. He started high-level meetings soon after his arrival here and is scheduled to meet top leaders today and tomorrow
